What is Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

At our firm, we handle both Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Chapter 7 bankruptcy is a debt liquidation bankruptcy in which most forms of debt are completely eliminated or significantly reduced.

Through a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, a person can discharge credit card debts, medical bills, certain types of civil judgments (lawsuits) and even federal income taxes if they are sufficiently old (usually three years or more).

To be eligible for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you must meet an economic means test. People who do not qualify for Chapter 7 relief typically do qualify for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Because certain types of assets must be liquidated in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, people with significant assets may prefer a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Visit our Chapter 13 bankruptcy page to learn more.
